Recently, I was taking my trash out and cleaning the toilet/bathroom near my office at work...yes, I take out my own trash and clean my own toilet, and I don't mind it. There is no job below me. Let me explain.
I was having a conversation with the Lord while I was doing these menial tasks. I couldn't help but smile, because Colossians 3:23 popped into my head, "Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men." I laughed a little, "I'm scrubbing this toilet for you, Jesus. Glory be to God!" I scrubbed with a little more vigor.
I know it probably seems super convenient for an employer to post about the importance of doing things for the Lord and not for man. But, y'all, do you know why this important? Sure, it helps the employer get work done efficiently, and it helps the employee to advance within the company, because he/she can be trusted to do everything with excellence....
BUT......
If you continue to read Colossians, you will notice that those who work as if unto the Lord and not men will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.
AN INHERITANCE. This is huge.
Who wants to miss out on the opportunity to receive an inheritance from the Creator of the universe? I know I don't, so with every stroke of the toilet brush, I will clean it as if Jesus Himself was about to show up and sit on the throne. Okay, maybe not His usual throne, but you get what I am throwing down, right?
God is literally saying, "Hey, everything you do at your job counts towards service to me." He is the Ultimate Boss and can give me and you more than an employer ever can.
We are also told, "Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs and there is no favoritism." Just felt like I couldn't leave that part out.
It's in our best interest, our eternal interest, to take our work seriously even if we dislike our tasks, our boss, or our coworkers. God's word plainly tells us that His inheritance, a spiritual inheritance, is at stake.
And I want in. I hope you do, too.
